DK-weight yarns

DK, or Double Knitting, stands for traditional, medium thickness yarn, which is very popular in many kinds of knitting projects.

The name DK thread comes from the time when only thinner fingering thread was used. In order to achieve a thicker knitted surface, the yarn was knitted twice to obtain a dk-strength yarn. However, it is important to note that double knitting is also its own separate knitting technique that is not related to DK yarns.

DK-strong yarn is perfect for traditional Finnish knitwear, such as socks, sweaters, beanies and mittens.

The typical knitting density for DK-strength yarns is usually 20-24 stitches per 10 centimeters, and they are knitted with 3-4 mm needles. The flowability of the yarn is about 210-270 meters per 100 grams.

Estimated consumption of DK-strength yarns in different knitting projects:

Beanie with folded brim: 180-250 meters

Socks (size 38-45): 250-350 meters

Adult sweater (sizes S-XL): 1000-1500 meters
