DK-weight yarns

DK, or Double Knitting , is a traditional medium weight yarn that is one of the most popular types of knitting yarn in the world. DK yarns are great for a variety of knitting projects, including sweaters, socks, hats, and mittens.

The name DK dates back to the time when fingering-weight yarn was knitted twice to achieve a thicker result. It is good to note that that double knitting is also its own separate knitting technique, not related to DK yarns.

A typical knitting density for DK yarns is 20–24 stitches per 10 cm, and the recommended needle size varies between 3–4 mm. The runnability is usually around 210–270 m/100 g, which makes the yarns easy to knit.

Estimated yarn consumption with DK yarns:

  • Beanie (folded edge): approx. 180–250 m
  • Socks (size 38–45): approx. 250–350 m
  • Adult sweater (S–XL): approx. 1000–1500 m
